Q&A with Fly Fishing Studios

Recently, we were fortunate enough to meet Boyd Waters from Fly Fishing Studios. We have been long-time fans of Boyd’s work, where he creates the most elaborate fly designs. We were lucky enough to get Boyd to agree to a short Q&A for our readers to see inside how Boyd and Fly Fishing Studios started.

1. What got you started in fly tying?
I was introduced to fly tying through Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing after returning from deployment in Iraq with the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division (Airborne). What began as therapy quickly grew into a lifelong passion and creative outlet.

2. What is your favorite thing you have tied so far?
Recently, Falkor the Luck Dragon has become my favorite. He edges out SpongeBob, though both hold a special place. I especially enjoy how Falkor sparks childhood memories and connections with people.

3. Are you planning any new projects?
Yes, I always have new work on the bench. Some exciting pieces are in progress, but for now, I’m keeping the details under wraps.

4. What do you consider a perfect day for fishing?
Any day on the water is a perfect day, whether the fish are biting or not.

5. When did you start Fly Fishing Studios?
I launched Fly Fishing Studios five years ago, though I’ve been creating sculpted flies for nearly 20 years. My first spun deer hair piece was a Narwhal I tied in Alaska in 2009.

6. Where do you see your company in the next five years?
I hope to continue growing while introducing more people, especially youth, like my kids, to fly tying and fly fishing. Working with organizations that teach children has been incredibly rewarding, and I want to help build the next generation of anglers and tiers.

We hope to have Boyd come and talk on one of our episodes about flytying and share his insight into fishing. Make sure to check out his social media pages and support his pages!
